The capitol since 1792, the State House is New Jersey's most historic public building. Today it houses the executive and legislative branches of government, includes magnificently restored chambers and is a "must see" for anyone interested in civics and architecture. Trenton War Memorial Theater, the state's official monument to all New Jerseyans who served in the Armed Forces of the United States, was built in 1930 and is widely known as a center for the performing arts. An architectural treasure listed on the National Register and the State Register of Historic Sites, the War Memorial was reopened in 1999 by the State of New Jersey following a $35-million restoration and renovation. Designed by John H. Duncan, architect of President Grant’s Tomb, and dedicated in 1893, the monument is a triumphal column of granite 148 feet high which marks the place where George Washington placed the artillery for the Battle of Trenton. Three cast bronze plaques, two by Thomas Eakins and one by Karl Niehaus, depict Washington’s army crossing the Delaware, the opening of the Battle of Trenton, and the surrender of the Hessians.
